Society for the Urban Poor - "SOUP"
Established in 1992, SOUP serves women and children of educationally, socially and economically deprived communities of urban and suburbs areas.
Besides receiving grants, SOUP also mobilizes local donors and resources. It assists women, children and community based organisations of urban poor communities of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Kirtipur.
Women for Human Rights - "WHR"
Women for Human Rights, single women group (WHR) is a national NGO established in 1994 to address the social, economic, legal and religious marginalization of single women (widows) of Nepal.
WHR's main objectives are to mainstream the rights of single women (widows) in development, humanitarian and peace building projects, and to build the capacity of single women (widows) to be their own agents of change.
WHR has 105 single women groups in 36 districts with a membership base of 14,000 and includes widows of all categories (security forces, army, police, public and even Maoists).
"Chahari" Second Home for Single women (widows) was established one year ago for women in need of immediate relief. They are provided hot meals and sleeping space in a secure and caring environment.
Single women (widows) come here for trauma and legal counselling, and receive skills trainings. It is also a centre where single women can share their innermost feelings without being judged.
Chahari provides support services to this marginalized section to reintegrate them into society. more... |
Ram Devi Tamang was widowed ten years ago. She is from Kavre to the east of Kathmandu. Ram Devi had training from WHR in sewing and now teaches women in Kavre.
She also facilitates savings & credit' activities for embers of
the single women's
groups to earn income
such as by raising
livestock.
Through micro-finance activities, the women
have access to loans
to purchase livestock,
start a shop, or buy
fabric to sew and
sell garments. |

Porters' Progress Sagarmatha - "PPS"
Porters’ Progress Sagarmatha supports and promotes community development for rural poor people in Eastern Nepal who work as porters to make a living. PPS operates from Lukla in the Solu-Khumbu or Everest region. PPS is officially registered with the Nepal Government and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal.
Porters’ Progress Sagarmatha seeks to be a new model for development in Nepal by concentrating upon the strength and capability of porters as a means of creating sustainable change. |
